Why Quality Underlayment Matters

Underlayment is the water-resistant barrier installed directly on your roof deck, beneath the shingles or other roofing material. It is your roof’s critical second line of defense: when wind drives rain under the shingles, or when shingles are damaged in a storm, the underlayment is what keeps water out of your home. In Houston’s climate of heavy rain, humidity, and Gulf storms, cutting corners on underlayment is one of the most expensive mistakes a homeowner can make. Garrick Roofing installs quality underlayment on every roof we build, the right way, since 1989.

Synthetic vs. Felt Underlayment

Underlayment is the water-resistant layer between your roof deck and your shingles, and the type matters. Traditional felt (tar paper) is the older, budget option — it works, but it is heavier, tears more easily, and absorbs water over time. Modern synthetic underlayment is lighter, far stronger, more tear- and water-resistant, and lays flatter for a cleaner installation. For most Houston-area roofs we recommend a quality synthetic, and we will explain the options and the difference before you decide.

Where Underlayment Matters Most

  • Valleys. Where two roof planes meet and water concentrates — a prime leak point.
  • Eaves and rakes. The roof edges, where wind-driven rain pushes water back upward.
  • Around penetrations. Chimneys, vents, and skylights, where flashing alone is not enough.
  • Low-slope sections. Where water drains more slowly and sits longer.

In these vulnerable areas we often add a self-adhering ice-and-water shield — a fully waterproof membrane — for an extra layer of protection against the wind-driven rain that causes most leaks.

Why We Never Skip Quality Underlayment

Underlayment is a relatively small part of the total cost of a roof, but a huge part of how well that roof protects your home. When wind drives rain under the shingles, or a shingle is damaged in a storm, the underlayment is the barrier that keeps water out. Skipping it or downgrading it to shave a few dollars is one of the most common ways a cheap roof job leads to expensive leaks later — which is exactly why Garrick installs quality underlayment on every roof we build.

Underlayment Questions, Answered

What is roof underlayment and why is it important?
Underlayment is the water-resistant layer installed on your roof deck beneath the shingles. It is a critical second barrier against water: when wind drives rain under the shingles or shingles are damaged, the underlayment keeps water out of your home. Quality underlayment is one of the most important parts of a roof that lasts.
What is the difference between felt and synthetic underlayment?
Felt is the traditional asphalt-saturated paper underlayment, while synthetic underlayment is a newer, engineered material that is lighter, stronger, and more resistant to tearing and water. Synthetic generally offers better protection and durability, and we will recommend the right option for your roof and budget.
What is ice and water shield, and do I need it in Houston?
Ice and water shield is a self-adhering, fully waterproof membrane used in the most vulnerable areas of a roof, such as valleys, eaves, and around penetrations. Even in Houston, where ice is rare, it provides excellent protection against the wind-driven rain that causes leaks in those spots.
Can I save money by skipping or downgrading underlayment?
We do not recommend it. Underlayment is a relatively small part of the total roof cost but a huge part of how well the roof protects your home. Skipping or downgrading it is one of the most common ways a cheap roof job leads to expensive leaks later.
How long does roof underlayment last?
Quality synthetic underlayment is built to last the life of your roof when properly installed and covered. If your shingles are exposed or damaged, though, the underlayment becomes your last line of defense — another reason not to cut corners on it.
Do you replace the underlayment during a roof replacement?
Yes. A proper roof replacement always includes fresh underlayment. We never reuse old underlayment — installing new shingles over worn underlayment undermines the whole system, so new underlayment is part of every re-roof we do.
