Why Quality Underlayment Matters

Underlayment is the water-resistant barrier installed directly on your roof deck, beneath the shingles or other roofing material. It is your roof’s critical second line of defense: when wind drives rain under the shingles, or when shingles are damaged in a storm, the underlayment is what keeps water out of your home. In Houston’s climate of heavy rain, humidity, and Gulf storms, cutting corners on underlayment is one of the most expensive mistakes a homeowner can make. Garrick Roofing installs quality underlayment on every roof we build, the right way, since 1989.

Underlayment Questions, Answered

What is roof underlayment and why is it important?
Underlayment is the water-resistant layer installed on your roof deck beneath the shingles. It is a critical second barrier against water: when wind drives rain under the shingles or shingles are damaged, the underlayment keeps water out of your home. Quality underlayment is one of the most important parts of a roof that lasts.
What is the difference between felt and synthetic underlayment?
Felt is the traditional asphalt-saturated paper underlayment, while synthetic underlayment is a newer, engineered material that is lighter, stronger, and more resistant to tearing and water. Synthetic generally offers better protection and durability, and we will recommend the right option for your roof and budget.
What is ice and water shield, and do I need it in Houston?
Ice and water shield is a self-adhering, fully waterproof membrane used in the most vulnerable areas of a roof, such as valleys, eaves, and around penetrations. Even in Houston, where ice is rare, it provides excellent protection against the wind-driven rain that causes leaks in those spots.
Can I save money by skipping or downgrading underlayment?
We do not recommend it. Underlayment is a relatively small part of the total roof cost but a huge part of how well the roof protects your home. Skipping or downgrading it is one of the most common ways a cheap roof job leads to expensive leaks later.
